The Problem Provably Fair Solves
When you play at a traditional online casino, you trust that:
- Their Random Number Generator (RNG) is truly random
- The RNG was not tampered with after you placed your bet
- The casino isn't secretly changing outcomes for large wins
We have to earn this. You can check our licences and our certifications from third party auditors like eCOGRA and iTech Labs. While these are important procedures they are a slow, dull, tedious process and they occur often enough to be of any use to you as a player, the verification of any single spin is totally beyond your control.
It manages the situation with randomness, or unpredictability using cryptography. In provably fair games you can prove or verify each outcome for any bet on the spur of the moment, without needing to trust anybody, a cryptomath, magician or otherwise.
How Provably Fair Works — Step by Step
The mechanism uses cryptographic hashing (typically SHA-256). Here's the full process:
Server seed commitment (before your bet)
Before you place a bet in a random number generator casino game, the casino creates a random "server seed" for the game and applies a hash function to the seed to create a "server seed hash" which is then displayed. The hash displayed to the user is one way and cannot be reversed to obtain the original seed.
Client seed (you provide)
The casino or player generates a "client seed" (in this case a string) randomly. Unbeknownst to either the casino or the player, this seed is enough to eliminate the possibility of either party guessing or controlling the outcome.
The bet is placed
The result of the hash function is the result of combining together the server seed, the client seed, and the bet number (nonce). The resulting hash is a deterministic, yet unpredictable value. The input values always produce the same hash value, yet the hash value is impossible to predict without knowing the input values.
Casino reveals the server seed (after the round)
After each game round or when you finish your game session, the original server seed will be shown. You can then calculate the hash of the server seed and make sure that it matches the hash you were given before you bet on the outcome of the upcoming game round.
You verify the outcome
Using the revealed server seed + your client seed + the nonce, you can recalculate the exact result by using any online SHA-256 cryptographic hash function utility. If the result of your calculation is the same as the result in the online Roulette, then no cheating has occurred.
What Provably Fair Can and Can't Guarantee
- The outcome was determined before your bet
- The casino did not change the result after you bet
- The randomness included your client seed
- Any individual bet result can be independently verified
- That the house edge is accurately stated
- That withdrawals will be processed and paid
- That the casino is legitimate in other respects
- That RTP on traditional video slots is correct (provably fair applies to native casino games only)
Provably Fair vs Traditional RNG Audit
Third-Party LTC Casino RNG Audits Regular third-party Random Number Generator (RNG) audits are common at traditional casinos as well as our LTC casinos. Our casino games from providers such as Pragmatic Play, NetEnt and Evolution Gaming are regularly checked and audited by reputable independent companies like eCOGRA, iTech Labs and BMM Testlabs.
This is a different trust model, but a valid one nonetheless. Instead of trusting the casino for verification, you choose to trust a third party testing lab. In this case as well, the casino can still run a fair game, but now the casino game becomes provably fair with an extra layer of verification that you can trust.

None of the five casinos that we review currently can be labelled as primarily a provably fair casino – all use typical games from normal licensed game providers. That here explains what provably fair means and why we mention this topic in relation to crypto casinos.
Games That Use Provably Fair
Provably fair is most common in native casino-built games:
- Dice games — hi-lo dice, custom dice games built by the casino
- Crash games — multiplier crash games where the round can end at any time
- Card games — blackjack or poker variants built natively (not from external providers)
- Plinko-style games — ball-drop games with cryptographically determined landing positions
- Mines/grid games — pick-tile games where bombs are placed using provably fair randomness
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be technical to verify provably fair outcomes?
Not really. Most provably fair casinos offer the option of verifying the result in the transaction history of your account. You can click the button shown below to verify the calculation. If you prefer to do this manually, you will need to use a hash calculator that supports SHA-256 hash generation and will also need to have the server seed, the client seed and the nonce values from the history of your transactions/bets.
Can I change my client seed?
Yes. Most provably fair casinos will let you set your client seed before every round or every bet. This way you are actually contributing to the randomness of the number generator. If you set a new seed every time you get to decide whether the outcome was random or not. Furthermore, when you set a new seed, this will cause a rehash of the servers seed and hence a new hash chain will start.
Is provably fair gambling safer than traditional online casinos?
Its different, not necessarily safer. In essence, provably fair gives you a cryptographic proof that the outcome of the game was random and can never be manipulated by the house. But being provably fair does not necessarily mean that the casino has reliable customer support, will honour winning withdrawals or has a valid gambling license.
Which LTC casinos use provably fair?
Casinos we Review that do not use Provable Fairness The five online casinos that we looked into in this category – Slot Mafia, StoneVegas, SlotLords, Bombastic, Welle – all make use of the standard licensed slot machine type games, which we described above in non provably fair terms. They all carry RNG audited casino games from well established online casino gaming developers. If you are specifically interested in provably fair casino gameplay, you will most likely have to take a look at a Bitcoin only casino that is located outside our current scope of coverage.
